Transient man arrested in connection with string of vehicle burglaries

A man suspected of committing a series of vehicle burglaries in San Mateo County was arrested recently, Belmont police announced Friday.

Several weeks of investigations by six San Mateo County law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest on the morning of May 17 in San Bruno of Matthew Justin Garcia, 26.

Garcia was arrested in connection with vehicle burglaries that occurred in Belmont, San Mateo, Redwood City, Hillsborough and Millbrae -- including six vehicle burglaries in Belmont's Hallmark area and six incidents in the Baywood-Aragon area of San Mateo, authorities said.

Garcia, a transient, was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle at the time of his arrest, according to authorities.

Detectives from San Mateo, Belmont, Redwood City, Hillsborough, San Bruno and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office worked together on the investigation.

"Crime and criminals don't respect jurisdictional lines, and law enforcement agencies must work together," Belmont Police Chief Don Mattei said in a statement Friday.

GG Ferry service shut down by surprise strike

The Golden Gate Ferry was shut down Saturday morning due to a ferry workers strike, which could last through all of Memorial Day Weekend.

After giving little to no notice of their intentions in the days leading up to the weekend, dozens of ferry workers began striking outside of the Golden Gate Ferry terminal in Larkspur Saturday morning, thereby shutting down service for that day.

The commuter-run blog SFferryriders.com reported the day before that there were rumors of the possible strike. Citing "a reliable source," the site stated that the reason for the strike was not only due to a lack of a new union contract, but because workers would not be paid for working through the holiday weekend while management would be compensated.

A spokesperson for the ferry service planned to hold a press conference on the strike later Saturday.

$312,000 Mega Millions prize from April still unclaimed in Danville

More than $300,000 in lottery winnings associated with a MEGA Millions ticket purchased in Danville in April remains unclaimed, state lotto officials said Friday.

The ticket was sold at a Chevron gas station at 145 Hartz Ave. and was one of two tickets sold in the state matching five of six numbers in the April 27 draw, making the ticket worth $312,766.

The other winning ticket was sold in Los Angeles, and that prize has since been claimed, lotto officials said.

Both tickets matched the numbers 5, 47, 2, 46 and 45 and were missing only the MEGA number of 37.

Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim their prizes.

Lotto officials recommend that winners sign the back of the winning ticket, which should be kept in a safe place until contacting lottery officials or visiting a local lottery district office.
